Patient Assessment

This online module is designed for outdoor professionals, enthusiasts, or for anyone interested in learning more about this topic. This course is NOT eligible for CME or FAWM. If you would like to earn CME for Patient Assessment, click here.

Course Description:

When a medical emergency occurs in the pre-hospital setting, responders use a framework for patient management. This assessment system allows for a responder to stay calm and organized during a rescue, orders potential problems and their subsequent response by importance, and improves patient outcome.  In this module, you will learn how to move through the scene survey, primary survey, and secondary survey of the patient assessment system, describe life-saving interventions such as airway management, spinal stabilization, and hemorrhage control, and appropriately document incidents.

Objectives:

The purpose of this module is to help you develop a process that will allow you to overcome obstacles and provide the patient(s) with the appropriate care.

Upon completion, students should be familiar with:

  • the primary and secondary survey
  • life saving interventions performed in the primary survey
  • evacuation guidelines specific to the injury or illness
  • a framework in which to respond to wilderness medicine incidents
