Wilderness Medicine CME- Cleveland, Ohio

Course Description:

WLS:MP is designed for medical professionals of all levels (MD, EMT, PA, NP, RN, etc) who have an interest in expanding their knowledge of wilderness medicine pathology and enhancing their practical skills in a wilderness environment. WLS:MP courses are designed for all types of outdoor enthusiasts, from the casual day hike to the extended expedition.

During this in-person course, students will learn the latest wilderness medicine skills for patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evacuation. Our expert instructors employ a wide scope of teaching methods, balancing online didactic lectures with practical, hands-on skills and scenarios. Emphasis is placed not just on the materials learned, but the critical decision-making skills surrounding effective backcountry medical management.

Upon course completion, students will earn the WLS:MP certification, valid four years, and be eligible for up to 21.25 hours of  Category 1 CME and Wilderness Medical Society Fellowship (FAWM) credit.

Location:

Cuyahoga Valley National Park lies along the Cuyahoga River between the Ohio cities of Cleveland and Akron. The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail is a restored section of the canal’s original towpath. In the park’s north, the Canal Exploration Center details the 19th-century waterway’s history. Towering Brandywine Falls is one of several waterfalls. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs through the park.

Students should be prepared to spend portions of the day in conditions that may include rain, wind, and/or cool temperatures.  Our course shelter is unlikely to be heated at this time of year.  We will have ample hot liquids (coffee, tea, hot cocoa) at the ready, but accommodations are more akin to a backcountry cabin or shelter than a front country classroom.  Appropriate footwear, under as well as outerwear, and spare dry clothes will be necessary to stay warm, comfortable, and enjoying the course.

Curriculum:

The materials below above are covered via online and in person didactic lecture, small group discussion, practical skills sessions, and live scenarios.
